VFF-31MR Super Sylph

Technical Data

Accomidation: Two
Height (Battroid Mode): 19.1 meters
Length (Fighter Mode): 22.2 meters
Weight: empty weight 11,706 kilograms; standard mission takeoff weight 23,700 kilograms; maximum takeoff weight 35,242 kilograms
Speed (Fighter Mode): Cruise: Mach 1.65, Max: Mach 3.0

Ability Data

Fighter Mode: The Super Sylph's standard mode. A sleak, aerodynamic form capable of flight at mach speeds.
Battroid Mode: The Super Sylph's main combat mode. Not as fast as Fighter mode, but capable of making better use of terrain, and the only form that can use certain weapons.
Gerwalk Mode: An alternate form which gives a balance between speed and combat.
Weapon Hardpoints: Super Sylphs have 6 hardpoints capable of carrying various weapons into combat. The loadout is usually dictated by the mission, though pilots have some lee-way available to them about certain aspects. Like the Sylphid, the Super Sylph's hardpoints are designed in a way to allow missiles to still fire when in Battroid mode, though bombs still cannot be used unless in Fighter or Gerwalk mode.
TARPS: Short for Tactical Aerial Reconnaissance Pod System, TARPS is the core of the Super Sylph's mission. Using a variety of optical and electronic surveillance systems, it is capable of collecting all kinds of information on the battlefield, and thus is indispensable to the SAF.

Weapon Data

20mm Vulcans: Standard aircraft vulcan cannons mounted on the fighter's "nose". Since the nose folds into the frame when transforming into Battroid mode, they are unusable. However the nose remains in place when in Gerwalk mode.
Dual Anti-Aircraft Laser Turret: The Super Sylph mounts 2 laser cannons, opposed to the Sylphid's one. Mounted on the head in Battroid mode, and on an underside turret in Fighter and Gerwalk mode.
55mm Gatling Gunpod: The Super Sylph's main combat weapon. The Gatling Gunpod is mounted on the left side of the chassis when in Fighter mode, and is held in the Super Sylph's hands in Battroid and Gerwalk modes.
Anti-Air Missiles: Each of the Super Sylph's hardpoints are capable of carrying 3 anti-air missiles, which are capable of homing on either laser or infra-red.
Swarming Missiles: Each of the Super Sylph's hardpoints are capable of carrying a pod of 15 "swarmer" missiles. While low-powered, the missiles are fast and are capable of hitting a target from multiple angles, effectively "swarming" the target.
Cluster Bombs: Each of the Super Sylph's hardpoints are capable of carrying a single cluster bomb, which is capable of covering a large area with bomblets.
Anti-Radar Missiles: Each of the Super Sylph's hardpoints are capable of carrying 3 missiles specifically designed to home in on radar and other tracking systems.
Reaction Missiles: During the final battle in the series, FAF high command authorized the use of reaction missiles against the JAM fleet preventing them from returning through the portal. Reaction missiles are the most devestating weapon in the FAF's arsenal, even stronger then previous nuclear missiles, without any of the dangerous radiation. Each of the Super Sylph's hardpoints are capable of carrying a single Reaction Missile.

Technical and Historical Notes

The Super Sylph is the primary aircraft of the Special Air Force, built around their doctrine of collecting information no matter the cost. Because of this, it is highly maneuverable and is capable of operating at a much higher altitude then other FAF units, allowing it to remain out of combat and get a wider view of the battlefield. Only one Super Sylph has been lost to enemy fire (the VFF-31MR/D Super Sylph "Yukikaze" piloted by 2Lt Rei Fukai, which was shot down in combat against an unknown JAM).

While it uses the VFF-31 designation, the Super Sylph is actually a completly different airframe from the Sylphid. The use of the designation was purely to assist in getting funding for the project.
